Today-
Photo 2- I hope that you brought your camera and coat today. After the blog we will go outside and have the shoot off. By the end of the period, you will need to have your photo shot, downloaded, edited and turned in. Take the best, most creative, original, visually appealing, correctly exposed, in focus photo you can. HAVE FUN!
Photo 1- Today we are going to start learning what all the features are on your camera. There is a worksheet to go with this, so be sure to pay attention and fill it out. This is likely to take a few days to get through, and that is fine- we want you to know how to use your camera! Don’t miss the next few days as we are going over this, if you do you will be missing quite a bit of info!
For today’s post- For those of you in Photo 2, you already know this- For those of you in Photo 1, you will learn this- I am big on lists and especially lists that make you think about how you can be a better person. Over at the Burns Auto Parts Blog ( a blog that is actually about photography, not auto parts) there is a great writeup about why not to do things. Too often we read and are told that you need to do more, work more, try more, etc. Well, here is the flip side and I think it is great. Read through the list of the 10 reasons to not do something. What do you think of it? Agree, disagree, why? Do you find that you take on too much? How does this affect you and your life/work?

I think that every last one of them are true and need to be followed. People do need to quit thinking that they can do everything, because you just can’t, no matter how much you think you are superman. Also people do need to be less cocky and face the fact that they aren’t as good as they think, and WORK ON IT MORE! People need to think about what they are doing more, it takes twice as long to multitask and get things done then it would to just take it one thing at a time, and the work will be better too. So to shorten this up, so it doesn’t take forever to read, people need to just shut up, quit working every-once-and-awhile, have fun, and not think they are the best. Thats my take on it.
I Thought this list was one of the best so far. It was very good and true. I agree with everything he said because it all makes life stressful when you work on too many things, and have too many distractions and try to do it all. You need to go one step at a time and do the best you can do on one thing at a time or else you will not be successful, because it IS impossible to do it all. I do not really personally take on too much work(school-wise), perhaps you could say that I don’t take on enough work because i am “lazy”. I need to start re-thinking my priorities, but I do put a lot of time into the things I love, like dance and golf and music. But trying to do too much at one time is overwhelming and way too stressful. My week is very busy but I take it one day at a time and have a schedule so I don’t get to packed with all my crap. Sometimes when you do too many things at once and try to be superman, you lose your mind so taking time off and to yourself helps restore your mind and you get back to what you need to do with a calm attitude. Sometimes I have to do this, just so I get back on the right track. I am busy with dance all the time and then golf starts and whoop!! there goes my life. I get so busy with it all and start to lose track of my homework and stuff which probably isn’t good. But I love doing it because it is what I enjoy and love doing. This list was pretty good I guess and got me thinking.
It seems like everyone is too busy, now that I think about it. I am pretty much neutral on this subject, because it says to not multitask, but if you are really good and quick at multitasking and you can get a lot more done faster than you would if you took your time on everything, I’d choose to multitask. I multitask at almost everything and it helps me get everything done. I actually think he’s just saying that because guys suck at multitasking.
I don’t think I take on too much at all. When I’m done doing tasks, homework, or chores, [ haha never mind. I don't have chores
] I have nothing to do!
I really liked this list. I feel too many people are always trying to do things and people are really stressed out. I think if they just took time off they would be less stressed and happier. I find that if I focus on one thing at a time then I will get more done because if I try to do a lot of things at once, I get distracted and don’t get anything done at all.
I think that they kinda made sense. Except I though if the more you do it, the better you get, lol. Not the more you will suck at it… No not really, I didn’t know that multitasking is not the best way to work, I always do that and it gets my work done way faster. It didn’t effect my life or work, I just read it and wrote on the blog.
I don’t think that number two makes any sense. If you work at it more its more likely that you will get better rather than stay bad. Number nine makes more sense because every one needs a breather so they don’t get burnt out. After a breather you will work harder and get more things done than you would if you worked strait through.
I agree with the list . It’s basically saying to slow down and take one thing at a time . I think I take a right amount of things on . The too main things are soccer and school and I can manage to have time for both of them . I don’t mind it . But when it comes to school sometimes I do take more than I can handle . Like if I have a bunch of test coming up it would be hard to study for all of them at the same time .
I like this list. I agree with the whole thing, it just makes total sense. I tend to say I will take on a lot of things and then end up doing half, and making excuses later as to why I didn’t do the other half. It makes me stressed and sleep a lot. I also just stop caring for what I am doing, even if I enjoy it.
I can relate to that. I have work everyday after school and i still have to get all my homework done. he makes a good point if you try to jam everything into one day or just do to much you will do horrible at it! So i think we should find away to do less and still do well!
well;
I Like it.
Its True,I Go By The Same Things Just About,
So I Get It.
It Makes Since to me.
Annddd No It doesn’t Change Anything About How I Look At Life Or Anything Because I Already Go By it.
I Have Very…
Odd Beliefs And Such Things.
So What The Normal People Would Consider odd,
I Consider Normal.
Anddd Well,, I Think i Take On Justtttt Enough(:
Yes, I completely agree with these. It really isn’t possible to do everything and be perfect. Sometimes I feel like I’m taking on too much work but honestly, I don’t think I really am. When I feel like I’m taking on too much work then I either get bored or I just don’t want to do it, so I don’t do it.
I think that he has some good points but some of the things he says I do not agree with pretty much 2-6 are the ones I don’t really agree with. Because I know of people and myself that do these things and it works for us and we have been successful at doing them and applying them to ourselves and lives. I don’t think I take on to much at all. I think the one that can affect my life the most is #10 because family is very important to me.
I agree with a lot of these points. It is important to just calm down a little bit and cherish what you have, without taking anything for granted. Although some of these points are a little harsh, there’s a lot of truth to them. I think it’s true that you should focus on a few crucial points of your life rather than trying to cram everything into your life and trying to be a big hotshot. I think he most important one is number ten, which says to spend more time just bonding with the people that you love, rather than focusing on material things and such. Because it helps your overall mentality and brings you down to earth a little more.
I don’t really believe in what he’s saying. Sure it’s true we all need to slow down and take time to regenerate. but some people (like me) work best under stress or multitasking. I still can manage to pay attention to detail, and really we shouldn’t sacrifice everything right now for the possibility of tomorrow — I mean you could throw your life away studying to become a lawyer and then our whole structure of government could change — what then? I think there are ways to have fun now and fun later, and it just takes the right kind of balance. Then again I am the one who doesn’t mind doing 100 questions on a novel in one night, it’s actually pretty fun!
I agree with the point stated in the list. I do believe that you can’t do everything, that’s why I don’t try to do everything. I also think you should focus on certain things and pay more attention to them. I also believe that time is a critical thing, and should be well distributed among certain things in your life. I think that all of these points are very useful and meaningful.
For the most part i agree with what this has to say. I agree for if you are trying to do to much then you will not be able to live up to what you think or others think that you can do. I also think that you can better relationships with less on your shoulders. I think that i do take on to much for it seems like i am always doing something. This effects my life and work for when i have no time to myself then i am not the best at the things that i normally do really well at. It also effects my life for my relationships are not the best when i am stressed about other things that seem important to me but are really not all that important in the long run.
I think that this list is kind of right but its put in such a harsh way, i definitely think it could be worded a lot better. I guess i would have to say i mostly agree with this list because its true that one person cant do everything all by them self but i disagree that you should just give up. If that was the case the United States would be filled with people who are even more unmotivated. I definitely think i take on too much but its good for me because it prepares me for the real world and i think thats something everyone needs to take into consideration. Im all for procrastination, I’m probably the biggest one of them all but to just give up is an entirely different thing. Its character breaking. The only number i think i would have to really agree with was number eight. You shouldn’t be stuck doing something you hate so i think that I’m really going to take this one to heart and let it affect my life/work because i never want to have to walk into working waiting for the minute i get to leave.
I don’t really understand what this is asking..
well it says like things not to do so you can like improve yourself in a way…i like it cause it says how to stay calm and to do your work or life in a way so it can be good and peaceful but it might take longer but it will be better
I agree with a lot of this. I think that if you give yourself time to finish something you’ve started, rather than cramming it all in at once to get through a deadline will make you better in the long run. I don’t think I take on too much, unless it comes to school and the work that comes with it. My mom pushes me to take on too much and therefore thats why it looks as if I don’t push myself to do better and get better grades. This affects my life by making me look at things differently. In a different perspective rather than telling myself I can do it or to push myself to do one more thing. It also shows me that I should find something I love to do, because it will be worth it even if I don’t make as much as I would sitting in an office all day staring at a computer screen. I’d much rather get my hands dirty working on an old Chevy and get paid half what I would working in an office like that. It shows me to enjoy life and the things that come with it. And also even though we love instant gratification over long term happiness, doesn’t really make us happy in the long run. We want fast results, but we aren’t willing to wait for them when they’re time consuming. It’s just another reminder to tell us that yes, we are more grateful when we wait rather than being happy for a few minutes.
I like that kind of lists. One thing that I hate about some lists is when they tell you exactly what to do and they leave nothing up to you. If a list leaves nothing to the human element then why not have a robot do that task. Lists that tell you what not to do leaves how to do the task at hand up to you.
I agree with this list for the most part. I think that this list is pretty funny, but still relatively true. All of these are important to keep in mind, but still, working is good and it is better not to procrastinate on projects. Many of these points should be taken with a grain of salt and modified to fit any individual who wants to live their life by them. I find that in life i try taking on way too much. Between school, family, friends, and other activities I never seem to have enough time for anything. Usually I don’t even have enough time to focus on one task so I have to try to multitask. Just as it says in the reasons to not do, multitasking isn’t good and makes everything you do come out average. Taking breaks can help and it would give me time to focus and do my best on each thing I try to achieve, just as is said on the list of reasons to not do. Having too many things to do or trying to take on more than I can, stresses me out so that I start to believe that I don’t have time to do anything. This list of ideas is rather harsh, but true and wise.
I think that the list is very true. I like how she says that you can’t do everything so focusing on just a few things will benifit you more and you will be better at them. I also like number five about gratitude because i think that it is true. I sometimes feel like i have to much to do but that is because i procrastonate and then i have a ton to do. But, i liked her list.
I agree with this list. I have a job, I’m a full time high school student, I have a family life, I have friends, Skating, and Church, with the occasional “Life” thrown in there. It’s hard to find enough time for EVERYTHING. Then again.. We all have to do it. I definitely believe you can lose yourself, while getting caught up in all the little things on the side. It IS important to stay close to the ones you love. There’s no need for distractions around those precious times. I think we take on too much because.. It’s what we want to do. We like the fact that there are things out there to keep us busy, and especially as teenagers. We get SO involved in the little details. Like who’s dating who, or the new trend, or CELL PHONES. Ugh. I think it’s definitely important to keep up with what you need, and organize your life.
i agree on some, but on others, not as much. for example, number 3. ‘multitasking is the worst way to work’. i honestly work better when listening to loud music. and when dong half of one assignment, going to another, then going back to the previous actually works pretty well for me. on number one. it was funny but very true. if i were to say i want to be the president of the united states right now. my chances are not great. number ten was pretty true too. like i had said maybe one of two i did not agree fully on but for most of them i did.
Personally i think some of them are a load crap. You can do anything you set your mind to. The more you do the better you will become as a person and if you practice what you are doing the better you will be at it. I do 3 sports and between all of those and school and volunteering at the Four Seasons Assisted Living and my home life it gets difficult but like i said the more you do the more you will be prepared for what comes ahead in life. Someone who plays every sport there is to offer can be incredibly amazing in all of them. I know people who can do anything without even trying and there so good at it.
Yes, I completely agree with these. It really isn’t possible to do everything and be perfect. Sometimes I feel like I’m taking on too much work but honestly, I don’t think I am. When I feel to crammed with work, and school, or sports, and such I do not do it or I take a break for a long time and have someone help me threw it.
I do not agree with this. I tend to try to do everything but I get the job done most of the time. It seems as though if I don’t multitask I can’t get anything done. Crazy right? This doesn’t affect my life or work too much. I will, however, agree with #1. It is hard to try to do EVERYTHING yourself but I wouldn’t just give up. Maybe ask for some help to do everything. #10 I think is also true. Technology is a distraction and people do need to spend more time with family and friends.
I can relate to a lot of these points, sometimes its important to just take a break. Some of these points are a little over board, but i like the one that says you should focus on a few cruical points in your life instead of doing every thing you can do everyone and trying to look really good by doing this. I think the most important one is number 8 because it is good to pursue the things you live because you will give all you have into that. The things you dont love you will just regret and in the long run you really will not have gotten anywhere.
I pretty much think that #1 sums up the total list of ten, “you cannot do everything.” It’s exactly what is, and it’s true. I agree with every single bullet on the list. Just the other day me and my friend michael were discussing our upcoming weekend. We both have to work, he has a friend get-together, I have a family get-together, he has to go down to Moscow to visit the college, I’m supposed to be going to Spokane to visit a friend of mine, and we have homework, his being a project. And on top of that it is Valentines Day on Sunday! Well this list that you have showed me I will most definitely use. #2; I cannot commit to everything I have on my list this weekend, so i need to pick out my priority ones or I will have an overall poor “probability” of making it to all of them. And #10 for instance, I need to spend time withe the people I love so that I have a better mind set about everything. So, as you can see sometimes I take on a bit much only being a seventeen year old. But with your help, I think I can make the calm and non-stressed decision on how to balance my job and my other activities, so for now on these are definitely going to be on my mind planning the weekend. “You cannot do everything. It’s impossible, so give it up.”#1
I think the list of reasons for not doing is well put together with solid arguments. I agree with most of them to a point especially the first and second which say you can’t do everything and the harder you try, the more likely it is you will suck at them. I am finding this true this year as I have taken on 5 AP Classes, a 7-day a week workout regimen, 2 youth groups, and boyscouts making for no free time. Thus far I have been able to do well in all of this but at the expense of sleep. I’m sure this will eventually catch up with me but surprisingly it hasn’t yet. Taking the advice from the list makes things much easier to deal with and makes for a more enjoyable life. It makes work easier and more efficient as well because you aren’t worried about one thing while working on something else. On the flipside the challenge of taking on many things at once can build character and prepare us for when life gets hectic when we have families, kids, jobs, and still try to engage in other activities.
I LOVE this list, mostly because I consider myself a realist and the tone and message throughout the list seem extremely up front and realistic. I have always been a strong believer in the “quality not quantity” philosophy, meaning I think it is MUCH more important to have a couple friends and one or two dominant hobbies rather than a huge amount of friends and a million things to do. I believe that someone is more able to truly devote their time and energy to a small amount of things, and therefore excel in them, rather then spreading themselves out too thin by taking on a large amount at one time, causing them to only give a minimal or superficial amount of effort to each. I used to think that having more friends, more hobbies, and more responsibilities was a sign of superiority, however, I soon realized that I was overly stressed and generally unhappy with my hectic and unfulfilling lifestyle. Now, I have a small group of friends and only a few hobbies to focus on, which gives me time to devote my entire self to them, rather then constantly rushing to the next thing. I find that I am MUCH more enthusiastic about my life now, and that I excel in the things that i truly want to do.
I think that whoever wrote it has a lot of truth to it. I really like they’re point of view and respect it. There is actually good reason behind those 10 steps and they really tell you how it actually is. I’d have to say my favorite would definitely be the first, plain and simply put. “You cannot do everything. It’s impossible, so give it up.” Its plain simple, and has so much truth to it. I agree with them about 99.4%. The point for because I don’t like the full 100. I don’t try to take on too much but I think that there is too much being put on me. With all of these orders and commands for me to get stuff done by certain due dates is stressful and some people don’t understand that you already have all this other stuff going on at the same time they want you to do something. It’s completely crazy. So, yes, there are times when I take on too many things at once because everything needs to be done at one point some sooner than other, but they still need to be done. For example, homework and studying, all needs to be done before there due dates. No point in studying what’s on the test after you’ve already taken the test, and homework is due when its due. You can’t put that stuff off if you want to succeed. The best time to get that sort of stuff done is in class, but some teachers say homework is for at home, when you can do it at home if the mother ships all over you trying to get you to do chores and prepare dinner. That needs to be done in a timely matter as well. All in all, life is stressful with juggling schoolwork, homework, and house hold chores, but life if life. It’s got to be lived. So do just that.
I completely agree. I think there are times when you really have to concentrate and try. But if you don’t try, you will be better off. I was always told to try really hard in school and at home, and when you try hard, you over think it and put way to much stress into it. Take the essay we did, If I were to do extensive research, use dictionaries, worry about spelling, and overall, worrying about how much work it would be, I wouldn’t have done it. It would have been held off and held off because I tried to hard and over thought it. In the end, it pays off not to try, but to just do it.
Also, my mom, between dinner and her bedtime, she always wants us to clean up. Her favorite line it, “I want it done before I go to bed” and she bugs us so much, that we get upset. One day she gave up, didn’t say a word, didn’t try. And she woke up to a clean house like she would’ve even if she nagged. But it was less work having us do it when we were able to rather than when she wanted us to do.
Anyways, I don’t know if I really proved anything. But to make a long story short, Don’t try and things will be a lot easier. I completely agree.
I think that these ten reasons just gave lazy people ten reasons not to do something. Yeah, some of this logic might work for some, but for me, I don’t really agree. You should always try even if you think you are going to fail because it sets you up for bigger challenges in the future. Yeah, you may not be able to do everything, but what if the thing you are thinking you can’t succeed in is something you actually can do. No one should ever tell you not to try. What if Joseph Niepce didn’t try to take the first picture, or we didn’t try to go to the moon or didn’t try to find cures for illnesses. Where would we be today?? Many times I think that I may have taken on too much with advanced classes and stuff, but I always push myself to succeed because I know that I always did my best. Even though the more activities you try, the chances are the more you will fail, but on average, it will all even out in the end. The amount I work does affect my life because I am always busy and sometimes I don’t have enough time to spend time with my family or I am kinda distracted.
i think number 9 makes since cause i like to take a break and normally after that break i feel much better about things but #4 doesn’t make scents because i don’t see how you would be more grateful…………
I think that this is completely right and I felt relieved to read it. It is true. You cannot do everything. Yes, some people who do try to do too much themselves might take this the wrong way, but its just true. You can’t do everything. Its just not gonna happen. But I personally think that it sent a great message. It was telling us to just relax and stop worrying so much about everything. It basically said that we just need to take a break and stop trying so hard. I completely agree with this because its so true that one person alone can’t do everything themselves and they just need to stop and concentrate on one thing at a time and just calm down. Because just like it said, if you worry about too much at once, its unhealthy. If you just relax and have fun once in a while, you will be much more psychologically healthy this way. He means good by saying this. He is just telling everyone to stop putting so much pressure on themselves and to take a break.
I liked the one ” You cannot do everything. Its impossible. So give up.” I liked it because its true, so many people try and do EVERYTHING and its not going to happen. You cant live your life if you try and do EACH and everyone.
I think that they kinda made sense. Except I though if the more you do it the better you get. Not the more you will suck at i No not really I didn’t know that multitasking is not the best way to work, I always do that and it gets my work done way faster. it dosent
Im pretty sure this is the best lists i have ever heard of in my entire life. They make everything seems so simple that everyone stresses about. I just liked it alot. My absolute favorite one was “The more you do, the greater the probability (not “possibility” even) that you will suck at it. You won’t be giving anything the attention it requires.”
